Yukon Business Continuity Essentials

Dealing with Disaster through Resilience

Whitehorse, Yukon
March 15, 2018

"I would encourage any business who does not already have a business continuity plan to consider attending any future chamber facilitated events or workshops around this subject"  - Kendell Tricker

Peter Turner, the president of the Yukon Chamber of Commerce, says he believes a conference hosted by the chamber Thursday will help businesses develop plans and connections to deal with major events that can threaten their operations.

Businesses and officials from various governments gathered at the Yukon Convention Centre to listen to various presentations on disaster planning and the like throughout the day. - Whitehorse Star Article

About Business Continuity Essentials

Facts:

  • 20% of organizations experience a failure (fire, flood, power outage, natural disaster, etc.) in any given year.

  • 80% of those organizations that experience such a failure will go under in just over a year.

  • 90% of organizations without a continuity plan fail after a disaster.

  • In Fort McMurray, since the fires, 40% of the businesses have not reopened.

  • Recovery efforts can eat up 25% off staff time for weeks or even months.

The Yukon Chamber of Commerce has organized this March 15, 2018 event to introduce Yukon businesses, not-for-profit organizations, First Nations and municipal governments to the principles, resources and experts that will enable organizations to put a business-continuity plan in place.

The presenters at “Business Continuity Essentials: Dealing with Disaster Through Resilience” will provide the tools for your organization to survive a disastrous event, focusing on:

  • Planning

  • Preparedness

  • Response

  • Recovery

“Business Continuity Essentials” attendees will learn what critical elements their organization needs to put in place to be one of the successful 20% that survive, and indeed may benefit from, weathering an organizational disaster.

Presenters will help attendees to answer these questions:

  • What are the principles of planning for organizational disasters - How can I realistically prepare my business for such risks?

  • How can I realistically prepare my business for such risks?

  • What are best practices for managing human resources in disaster situations?

  • What are my obligations toward my employees?

  • Are there workers’ compensation considerations of which I should be aware?

  • What are the occupational health and safety implications?

  • What are my insurance needs and what coverage is available?

  • What IT and communications mitigation strategies should I consider?

  • How will electrical utility practices impact my business?

Our lunchtime keynote speaker will share the experiences of an organization that has experienced a massive disaster and they will share the lessons learned.

An Awareness Area at the event will house a series of information booths staffed by emergency response specialists and service providers who will be available to share information and provide resources for attendees.

“Business Continuity Essentials” attendees will come away from the conference with an informational toolkit and a list of resources and next steps to make their organization resilient in the face of disasters that might otherwise critically impact the operations and delivery of services of their business, not for profit organization, First Nation government or municipal government.
